Types of Locksets

Door hardware is more important than most people tend to think. Much of the time people simply imagine doorknobs, hinges, and so forth, and think that as long as these elements are installed in the door, they’re good  practice lockset to go. But there are different types even within specific hardware areas. Locksets are no different. There are two basic locksets available to you; however, they can come in all sorts of styles, colors, and metals. These options are made available to you so you can choose the right hardware to match the décor of your home.

A knobset is the first type of lockset. Knobsets are the type that many people are most familiar with. Nearly every door you encounter is likely to have a knobset. This is a door handle that has a decorative geometric shape as a grip – most will utilize the circular design – and can either be locking or non-locking. The locking versions can be locked and opened in various ways depending upon how the knobset is made. Some will require a key to be opened, others will have a push button, and still others may have thumb turn locks. In almost every situation, a knobset with a locking mechanism will be active – that is, the knob will be able to turn. There are some knobsets where the knobs are “dummy,” or they don’t turn.

The other type of lockset is the leverset. A leverset is almost exactly like a knobset when it comes to all the things it can do. It can be turning or non-turning, it can be locked or have no locking mechanism, and the locking mechanisms can vary from keys to buttons. The main difference between a leverset and a knobset is the handle. The handle in a leverset uses a decorative handle instead of a shaped knob.

For both of these locksets, you can install them almost anywhere you want in your home. If you want a door to lock, then installing a lockset will do the trick right away. There are also interior and exterior locksets, and these are the mechanisms that keep your doors locked and safe. If you are unsure which you should buy, talk to a professional about the kind of lock you need for the doors of your home.

After that, it will simply be a matter of choosing the right style of knobset or leverset to tie the whole house together and keep things safe.
